Senior/Principal Electrical Engineer – Building Services

Cambridge – 3 Days Per Week
£70,000 – £80,000

An established Building Services consultancy is looking to appoint a Senior or Principal Electrical Engineer to join its Cambridge team, working three days per week.

The consultancy delivers projects across a broad range of sectors including Education, Residential, Workplace & Retail, Hospitality & Leisure, Healthcare & R&D, Heritage and Student Accommodation, providing plenty of variety across the role.

This opportunity would suit an experienced Electrical Engineer looking to progress into a Principal-level position, or an existing Principal Engineer looking for a part-time role with genuine technical and client-facing responsibility.

The Role

You’ll take a senior position within the electrical engineering team, combining hands-on technical delivery with design leadership, mentoring and client interaction.

You’ll be responsible for leading electrical engineering solutions across a varied project portfolio, ensuring high-quality design while helping develop the wider team and supporting the continued growth of the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leading electrical design across a variety of building services projects.

  • Taking technical responsibility for electrical engineering packages from concept through to completion.

  • Reviewing and approving calculations, specifications, drawings and technical reports.

  • Ensuring designs comply with relevant regulations, standards and industry best practice.

  • Providing technical guidance and mentoring to junior and intermediate engineers.

  • Working closely with clients, architects and wider project teams.

  • Building and maintaining strong client relationships.

  • Supporting project delivery, technical coordination and design reviews.

  • Contributing to business development, tenders and fee proposals.

  • Helping develop and improve electrical engineering processes within the consultancy.

What They're Looking For

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering or Building Services Engineering.

  • Significant experience within a Building Services / MEP consultancy.

  • Strong technical knowledge of electrical building services design.

  • Experience operating at Senior Engineer level, with the ambition or ability to progress to Principal.

  • Ideally Chartered or working towards Chartership.

  • Experience across multiple building sectors would be advantageous.

  • Previous experience mentoring or supporting less experienced engineers.

  • Strong client-facing and communication skills.

  • A practical, commercially aware approach with the confidence to take ownership of projects.
