Associate Director/Director – Civil Engineering

Leeds or York

An established, independent multidisciplinary consultancy is looking for an Associate Director or Director to help lead and grow its Civil Engineering offering across Yorkshire. The role can be based in either Leeds or York, with the flexibility to suit the right person.

The business

This is a well-respected, medium-sized practice with the scale to take on significant projects and the agility to give senior people real influence. Civil Engineering design teams work alongside in-house Building Surveyors and a wider consultancy group, so projects are delivered end to end. The business has a strong track record of unlocking challenging sites and achieving best value for clients, particularly brownfield sites and those with difficult topography or access.

The work is varied and includes:

• Substructures, access roads, sewer design and drainage layouts for new residential developments, designed to adoptable standards
• Flood Risk Assessments, Contaminated Land Surveys and feasibility studies for development sites
• Large-scale flood alleviation schemes, wharfs, jetties and marine structures, plus coastal erosion and flood breach analysis
• Environmental considerations such as land drainage, tree retention and the impact of development on wildlife habitats

The role

The successful candidate will lead the civil team's technical output and play a key part in the strategic direction of the business. Responsibilities include:

• Leading and mentoring engineers, and building a high-performing team across the Leeds and Hull offices
• Overseeing the delivery of projects, ensuring quality, programme and commercial success
• Developing and maintaining client relationships, and winning new work
• Working with architects, planners, local authorities and statutory bodies
• Contributing to business planning, fee proposals and growth

About you

• Chartered Civil Engineer (CEng MICE or equivalent) with a strong background in land development, drainage and infrastructure
• Proven experience leading teams and managing projects and client relationships
• Commercial awareness, with a track record of winning or growing work
• Marine, flood alleviation or coastal experience is desirable but not essential
• A collaborative, hands-on leadership style, with the ambition to shape the direction of a growing business
