The Company

A well‑established civil engineering contractor specialising in highways infrastructure works across the UK. The business delivers projects within live highway environments, focusing on safety, technical expertise, and collaborative working.

The Role

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Managing Quantity Surveyor to take full responsibility for the commercial function of the business. This role is effectively a Commercial Manager position, acting as the senior and leading figure within the commercial team.

You will be the number one commercially, overseeing commercial performance across projects and managing the commercial team. The role works closely with operational leadership and clients to ensure strong commercial control and delivery.

Experience in waterproofing, jointing, or structural highways works is preferred, however candidates with strong general highways experience will also be considered.

Key Responsibilities

  • Full commercial leadership across assigned highways projects
  • Line management, mentoring, and development of commercial team
  • Acting as the primary commercial interface with clients
  • Overall responsibility for cost control, forecasting, and reporting
  • Management of applications for payment, valuations, final accounts, and cash flow
  • Change control management including CE submissions, CEMAR, and commercial registers
  • Commercial input into pre‑contract and tender reviews
  • Feeding lessons learned from project delivery back into future pricing and bids
  • Producing turnover and margin forecasts alongside operational colleagues
  • Contract and subcontract review, risk management, and negotiation
  • Advising operational teams on variations, commercial risk, and scope changes
  • Ensuring projects are delivered efficiently, profitably, and in line with contractual requirements

About You

  • Degree qualified in Quantity Surveying (or equivalent)
  • Extensive experience within civil engineering / highways infrastructure
  • Currently operating at Senior QS, Managing QS, or Commercial Manager level
  • Waterproofing, jointing, structures, or highways maintenance experience desirable
  • Strong working knowledge of NEC contracts
  • Proven experience managing and developing commercial teams
  • Highly organised with strong commercial awareness
  • Confident communicator with the ability to manage senior stakeholders
  • Full UK driving licence
