Electrical Design Engineer – Building Services

A growing building services engineering team is looking for an experienced Electrical Design Engineer to join its multidisciplinary design environment.

The role will involve delivering electrical building services designs across a range of projects, working closely with clients, architects, contractors and other engineering disciplines. You will take ownership of electrical design packages from concept through to detailed design, ensuring solutions are practical, efficient and compliant with current UK standards and regulations.

The Role

You will be involved in the design and coordination of a variety of electrical building services systems, including:

• Power distribution and electrical infrastructure
• Lighting and emergency lighting
• Fire alarm and detection systems
• Small power and containment
• Security and associated specialist systems
• Energy monitoring and electrical efficiency solutions
• EV charging and renewable energy systems where required

You will produce and review technical design information, calculations, specifications and drawings, while working alongside wider project teams to ensure designs are coordinated and delivered to a high standard.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop electrical building services designs from concept through to detailed design and construction stages.
• Carry out electrical load calculations, fault level assessments and diversity calculations.
• Produce and review single-line diagrams, panel schedules, specifications and technical reports.
• Design systems in accordance with BS 7671, Building Regulations and relevant British Standards.
• Incorporate energy efficiency and sustainability considerations into electrical design solutions.
• Use AutoCAD, Revit MEP and other relevant design software to produce accurate technical information.
• Undertake site surveys and inspections, assessing existing installations and identifying design requirements.
• Assist with Building Control submissions, technical documentation and electrical certification.
• Coordinate electrical designs with architects, mechanical engineers, structural engineers, contractors and other project stakeholders.
• Liaise with clients, contractors, Building Control and Distribution Network Operators where required.
• Review designs and installations to ensure compliance, quality and coordination.
• Keep up to date with changes to Building Regulations, BS 7671, British Standards and industry guidance.

About You

The ideal candidate will have:

• A degree or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering or a related discipline.
• Around 3–5 years' experience in UK electrical building services design.
• Strong knowledge of BS 7671 and UK Building Regulations.
• Experience designing electrical systems within commercial, residential or other building services environments.
• Good working knowledge of AutoCAD and/or Revit MEP.
• Experience producing electrical calculations, drawings, specifications and technical documentation.
• An understanding of energy efficiency, sustainability and modern electrical technologies.
• Experience working within multidisciplinary project teams.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to liaise confidently with clients and other project stakeholders.
• An understanding of CDM requirements and their application to electrical design.
• Professional registration or progress towards CEng status is desirable but not essential.
• Experience with BREEAM, EV charging, renewable technologies, smart building systems and energy monitoring would also be beneficial.
