Principal/Associate Civil Engineer – Highways

Cardiff

£65,000 – £80,000

An established multidisciplinary engineering consultancy is looking to appoint a principal or Associate Civil Engineer with a strong highways background to join its growing team in Cardiff.

With a close-knit team and the flexibility of an independent consultancy, the business offers an environment where experienced engineers can take ownership of projects, develop client relationships and play an active role in shaping the future direction of the team. Innovation, professional development and sustainable engineering are central to its approach, with a strong emphasis on collaboration, industry engagement and supporting the next generation of engineers.

The Role

The successful candidate will take a leading role in the delivery of highways and infrastructure projects, overseeing technical design, managing project teams and maintaining strong relationships with clients and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and delivery of highways and civil infrastructure projects from concept through to detailed design and construction.

  • Manage project programmes, resources, budgets and technical deliverables, ensuring projects are completed to the required standards.

  • Oversee highways design, including road layouts, junctions, access arrangements, drainage coordination and associated infrastructure.

  • Review and approve technical drawings, calculations, specifications and design reports to ensure quality and compliance.

  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, clients, contractors, local authorities and other project stakeholders.

  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior and intermediate engineers, supporting their professional development.

  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships, acting as a key point of contact throughout project delivery.

  • Identify opportunities to expand the consultancy's highways offering and contribute to business development activities.

  • Ensure designs comply with relevant highways standards, regulations and industry guidance.

  • Promote sustainable and innovative engineering solutions, considering environmental impact, efficiency and long-term performance.

  • Support continuous improvement across design processes, technical standards and project delivery.

  • Contribute to the strategic development and future growth of the highways team.

Requirements

  • Degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.

  • Significant experience in civil engineering consultancy, with a strong specialism in highways design and infrastructure.

  • Proven experience managing highways projects and coordinating technical delivery.

  • Strong knowledge of relevant highways design standards, guidance and regulatory requirements.

  • Experience working with local authorities, developers, contractors and other project stakeholders.

  • Ability to review and oversee technical designs, drawings, calculations and specifications.

  • Strong project management, organisational and problem-solving skills.

  • Experience mentoring engineers and providing technical leadership within a project team.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the confidence to manage client relationships and contribute to business development.

  • A proactive approach to sustainable design, technical innovation and continuous professional development.

The Opportunity

This is an opportunity to join a well-established, independent consultancy that combines broad technical capability with the personal approach of a smaller business. The team values collaboration, innovation and professional development, giving experienced engineers the opportunity to make a visible contribution rather than becoming just another number.

For the right candidate, there is scope to take on greater responsibility, influence the direction of highways projects and help develop the team's capabilities as the business continues to grow. The consultancy is committed to keeping pace with industry developments, promoting sustainable engineering and supporting a positive, inclusive working environment.
