Looking to take ownership of transport operations in a hands on leadership role?

This is an excellent opportunity for an energetic and proactive Transport Team Leader to join a specialist equipment business. The role suits someone confident managing day to day transport operations, international movements, and compliance, while supporting the Transport Manager and working closely with a Transport Assistant.

You will be responsible for UK transport activity as well as international containers, European shipments, and local deliveries. Training can be provided where needed, particularly around plant handling.

The Role

As Transport Team Leader, you will support the Transport Manager with the day to day running of the transport function. You will oversee driver compliance, vehicle management, route planning, and international shipping activity, ensuring operations run safely, efficiently, and in line with regulations.

Key Responsibilities

UK Transport and Driver Management

  • Carry out regular driver licence checks to ensure correct entitlement.
  • Monitor driver hours and Working Time Directive compliance.
  • Download, store, and manage digital tachograph data.
  • Provide required documentation for international journeys.

Vehicle Management

  • Oversee vehicle maintenance schedules and servicing.
  • Ensure vehicles remain roadworthy and remove from service when required.
  • Arrange MOTs and safety inspections.
  • Ensure defects are reported and rectified promptly.

Operational Management

  • Plan routes and schedules to maximise efficiency.
  • Maintain accurate transport and compliance records.
  • Liaise with internal departments, suppliers, and customers.
  • Investigate incidents such as prohibitions or test failures.
  • Manage STGO Category 1 and Category 2 movements for oversized loads.

International, European and Container Movements

  • Manage imports and exports, including European shipments and containers.
  • Understand Incoterms and associated export and import documentation.
  • Liaise with freight forwarders regarding shipments and rates.
  • Provide customers with ETAs and monitor inbound schedules.
  • Prepare packing lists, delivery notes, and invoices.
  • Manage customs processes and documentation.
  • Generate GMRs, levy payments, and ferry bookings.
  • Liaise with overseas suppliers to coordinate shipment schedules.
  • Plan deliveries and collections of equipment.
  • Communicate with drivers and subcontractors to provide accurate ETAs.

Skills & Experience

  • Previous experience in transport coordination or transport supervision.
  • Good understanding of UK transport compliance and driver management.
  • Knowledge of STGO Category 1 and Category 2 movements (essential).
  • Experience with international shipping, containers, and customs procedures.
  • Understanding of Incoterms and import export processes.
  • Confident liaising with drivers, subcontractors, suppliers, and freight forwarders.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Clear communication skills and fluent English.
  • Proactive, reliable, and comfortable working in a hands on environment.
  • Plant or heavy equipment knowledge desirable but not essential.
