An established and growing multidisciplinary engineering consultancy based in Cambridge is looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join its building services team.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced engineer to take on a senior role within a small-to-medium sized practice, where they'll benefit from close mentorship, genuine autonomy, and real influence over how projects and people are managed. The Role

The successful candidate will take a leading role on a varied portfolio of projects spanning education, residential, retail, healthcare, and heritage sectors. No two days will look the same — one week could involve the sensitive mechanical design considerations of a listed heritage building, the next a fast-paced retail fit-out or a technically demanding healthcare scheme.

Alongside project delivery, this role carries genuine progression potential. The successful candidate will take ownership of projects from concept through to completion, while also mentoring and managing junior engineers, helping to shape their development and supporting the wider growth of the team.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical engineering design across a diverse project portfolio, including education, residential, retail, healthcare, and heritage schemes
• Manage projects from feasibility through to construction and handover, taking ownership of technical quality, programme, and client relationships
• Supervise, mentor, and support the development of junior engineers within the team
• Produce and review mechanical designs, calculations, specifications, and drawings in line with current regulations and best practice
• Liaise directly with clients, architects, and wider design teams to ensure the smooth delivery of projects
• Contribute to the continued growth and reputation of the practice

About You

The ideal candidate will be a chartered or nearly chartered mechanical engineer with solid experience in building services design, ideally gained within a consultancy environment. Experience across a mix of sectors — particularly any of education, residential, retail, healthcare, or heritage — would be highly advantageous, as would previous experience mentoring or managing junior staff.
