Role Summary
As a DevOps Engineer, you will play a central role in delivering secure, scalable, and highly available digital services. Embedded within an agile, multidisciplinary team, you will drive end-to-end automation, build infrastructure as code (IaC), and enable rapid, reliable deployment from discovery through to live operation.
Key Responsibilities
Pipeline Management: Design, build, and maintain deployment pipelines and automation using tools such as Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or Jenkins, ensuring alignment with national government digital standards.
Infrastructure as Code: Define and manage cloud environments using IaC (Terraform, Bicep, Ansible) to guarantee consistency, resilience, and scalability.
Agile Collaboration: Partner with developers, architects, and product leads to support continuous integration, secure builds, and frequent releases.
Process Automation: Embed end-to-end automation across build, test, deployment, and infrastructure management to maximize operational efficiency.
Best Practice Champion: Promote DevOps principles, conduct IaC reviews, share technical knowledge, and contribute to the broader delivery community.
System Support & Monitoring: Monitor and troubleshoot infrastructure and deployment issues to ensure high availability and performance, participating in second-line support and incident response where required.
Required Skills and Experience
CI/CD Pipelines: Proven expertise in designing and operating continuous integration and deployment pipelines (e.g., Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, Jenkins).
Cloud & IaC: Strong proficiency with major cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) alongside IaC tools like Terraform, Bicep, or Ansible.
Scripting & Programming: Solid hands-on coding or scripting ability in Python, Go, Bash, JavaScript, or PowerShell.
Containers & Architecture: Hands-on experience with containerisation and orchestration tools (Docker, Kubernetes) within microservices architectures.
DevOps Methodology: Sound knowledge of version control (Git), automated testing, security-by-design, and collaborative Agile workflows.
Desirable Skills
Familiarity with monorepo tooling (NX, Turborepo) or modern PaaS platforms (Netlify, Vercel).
Working knowledge of front-end technologies such as React.
Demonstrated experience in mentoring team members and growing internal technical capability.
Due to the highly sensitive nature of this work, candidates must hold active UK enhanced Developed Vetting (eDV) clearance.
