The opportunity
An established, multi-disciplinary energy and sustainability consultancy is looking for a Senior or Principal Energy Engineer to take on a technically rich, varied role. The position blends hands-on site work with strategic project leadership and offers the chance to help shape new service lines while working on some of the most exciting projects in the UK’s energy transition.
The successful candidate will be a trusted technical authority, supporting clients across the private, industrial, commercial and public sectors while mentoring a talented Energy Engineering team.
You will be:
- Providing technical expertise across low-carbon heat (heat pumps, heat networks and electrification), whole-building retrofit (fabric first and MEP optimisation), on-site renewables and storage, and Energy Performance Contracting models
- Working on renewable and generation projects, including wind, solar, battery and storage systems
- Applying environmental compliance knowledge, including ESOS (Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme)
- Leading surveys of complex, energy-intensive estates and getting to grips with highly sophisticated systems
- Supporting quality assurance and quality control, and providing technical guidance across a broad range of services
- Mentoring and developing colleagues across the wider Energy Engineering team
- Managing multidisciplinary projects, budgets and delivery risk
- Overseeing the full project lifecycle, from strategy, feasibility and business case through procurement and construction to performance monitoring
Ideally, you will have:
- Experience delivering energy or decarbonisation programmes across private, manufacturing, industrial, commercial, public sector and built environment settings
- A proven track record of managing complex, multi-stakeholder projects
- Experience turning technical analysis into deliverable, investable programmes
- Strong understanding of complex energy-focused project delivery, renewable and generation projects, environmental compliance, regulation and legislation, project risk (including health and safety), commercial awareness and budget management, and data interpretation and asset planning
- Excellent client-facing communication and relationship-building skills
- Demonstrable involvement in business development, bids or opportunity origination, including tender and proposal writing
Desirable
- ESOS Lead Assessor status and active involvement in surveying for environmental compliance
- A background in engineering, building services, energy management or infrastructure
- Financial modelling or business case development experience
- Knowledge of heat networks, heat pumps, large-scale retrofit delivery or estate-wide decarbonisation
- Project delivery experience across RIBA Stages 0 to 7
- Electrical knowledge
Qualifications
- A degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent professional experience
- Membership of a professional body such as CIBSE, EMA, IMechE or IEI/MEI
- Chartered status, or currently working towards chartership
- Certified Energy Manager (CEM) status, or currently working towards certification
