Principal/Associate Mechanical Engineer – Building Services

An established Building Services consultancy is looking to appoint a Principal or Associate Mechanical Engineer to join its Cambridge team on a part-time basis, working three days a week.

The consultancy has a strong and varied project portfolio spanning Education, Residential, Workplace & Retail, Hospitality & Leisure, Healthcare & R&D, Heritage and Student Accommodation, giving you exposure to a genuinely broad mix of sectors rather than being tied to one narrow specialism.

This role would suit an experienced Mechanical Engineer who is ready to step into, or continue operating at, Principal or Associate level, taking on a leadership role within the business while remaining technically engaged in project delivery.

The Role

You'll take a senior, hands-on role across the mechanical engineering function, balancing technical design leadership with broader responsibilities such as mentoring, client relationships and business development. You'll oversee the delivery of mechanical services across a range of project types, ensuring technical quality while supporting the wider team's growth.

Key Responsibilities

• Leading mechanical design across a diverse portfolio of sectors
• Overseeing technical delivery and ensuring design quality and compliance
• Mentoring and supporting junior and mid-level engineers
• Building and maintaining strong client relationships
• Contributing to business development and growth of the practice
• Reviewing and approving mechanical calculations, specifications and drawings
• Ensuring designs meet current regulations, standards and best practice
• Supporting projects from concept through to completion

What They're Looking For

• Degree in a relevant engineering discipline (Chartered or working towards Chartership preferred)
• Significant experience as a Mechanical Engineer within a Building Services consultancy
• Proven experience operating at, or ready to step into, Principal or Associate level
• Strong technical design knowledge across multiple sectors
• Experience mentoring or managing junior engineers
• Confidence engaging directly with clients
• Practical, solutions-focused approach with strong leadership qualities
